The Speedster has long been regarded as the most collectible, and does enjoy a certain purity of line that is very attractive; however, the 1964-1965 Cabriolet models enjoy functional and mechanical updates that make them more pleasurable to drive in modern traffic.
Thus, enthusiasts wishing to truly enjoy their cars are attracted to the 356 SC model Cabriolet.
With its higher horsepower and larger displacement engine, refined transmission, and increased stopping power via disc brakes, the SC represents the ultimate evolution of the open 356, while still retaining the timeless silhouette that brought the car to its initial acclaim.
The stunning 1965 Porsche 356 SC Cabriolet presented here was purchased new in March 1965.
Collected via the European Delivery Program, the proud first owner enjoyed his 356 Cabriolet by traveling throughout Europe before returning home with the car to Santa Barbara, CA in 1966, where it remained in his care for the next 30 years.
Sold circa 1996 to its second owner, also in California, the mild climate has ensured that the car retains its original floors, longitudinal members, battery box, and matching number body panels to this day.
During his ownership, the 356 SC Cabriolet was treated to a full concours-level restoration.
As documented by the accompanying Porsche Certificate of Authenticity, the original matching numbers engine and transmission are present, and were both rebuilt, resulting in a car that could be both shown and enjoyed on the open road.
Equipped with a number of rare options and accessories, including its wonderfully preserved 2-piece luggage set, Blaupunkt radio, and stunning wood VDM steering wheel, the Cabriolet is also prepared for any weather condition via the fitted insulated convertible top, and matching boot.
Upon completion, the 356 was entered into multiple concours events throughout California, including the Carmel-by-the-Sea Concours on the Avenue, the Dana Point Concours d'Elegance, and the Huntington Beach Concours, where in Full Concours judging the 356 SC received a total score of 288.
2 out of 300, with the judges noting that it was a Beautiful car! Stunning! and that they Love the Steering Wheel! Upon arriving at Canepa a thorough inspection was performed, with over $25,000 spent in the Canepa Workshop on a comprehensive mechanical service to ensure all systems were operating to factory standards, while extensive road testing ensured that the Cabriolet performed flawlessly under all conditions.
The car was then treated to a full concours-level detailing regimen, ensuring that every area subject to the scrutiny of judging is spotless.
The combination of which, has again returned this 356SC to a show quality presentation that can be proudly driven with confidence.
The 1965 year model 356 SC benefitted from 17 years of continuous improvements to the 356 platform.
This final year Cabriolet has the highest output SC specification engine, and confidence inspiring ATE disc brakes on all four corners.
An outstanding example of one of Porsche's most recognizable sports cars, it is now ready for many more years of motoring adventure.
