Either you do it right or you are not going to do it at all.
- Alwin Springer McLarens, Bugatti, Lamborghini - masterpieces of modern engineering, testaments to relentless horsepower and cutting-edge technology.
Yet, may I suggest somethingslightly more analog? Allow me to introduce you to the 1964 Porsche 356 C Coupe.
This particular example goes beyond simply being a classic, even beyond a piece of history.
This vehicle belonged to Porsche legend Alwin Springer.
A man renowned in the world of Porsche for monumental feats in the golden era of racing.
As quoted above, his philosophy shaped not only his work but the essence of Porsche's performance.
This 1964 Porsche 356 C Coupe is not just a car; it's a legacy on wheels, driven by Alwin himself, whose fingerprints are on the steering wheel as much as on the pulse of Porsche racing history.
The car sat for quite a while after I had purchased it, but I decided to start working on it at one point, said Alwin.
Dieter had much more experience working on them than me, so he oversaw the repairs and ensured they were done correctly.
Except for the engine, he directly worked on it and the carburetors to make sure they were tuned perfectly.
Eric Bloss Legendary Porsche engine builder also worked on the 356 engine, he said.
Alwin chuckled as he mentioned Eric was 18 when he had started working for him at ANDIAL.
For me, this car is special.
I wanted a car that was safe and that we could drive up to Laguna Seca with our group of friends.
I have very fond memories of those times.
Alwin Springer's passion for precision engineering and his inherent affinity for the Porsche brand led him to join the ranks of Vasek Polak's renowned Porsche dealership in Hermosa Beach, California.
It was here, amidst the gleaming Porsches and the scent of motor oil, that Springer's profound understanding of what made these machines tick began to flourish.
He quickly became an integral part of the Porsche community, revered for his technical acumen and uncompromising standards.
Established in 1975, Alwin, alongside Arnold Wagner and Dieter Inzenhofer, formed ANDIAL, which became the cornerstone of Porsche's racing triumphs in the United States.
ANDIAL, an acronym derived from the names of its founders, has become synonymous with Porsche's motorsport activities in North America.
ANDIAL's expertise in performance tuning and racing support was pivotal to numerous victories, cementing its status as an integral part of Porsche's racing arm in the U.
S.
It became known for delivering engineering solutions that pushed the boundaries of Porsche's vehicles on the racetrack, embodying the spirit of innovation and excellence that Alwin Springer carried throughout his career.
Springer's prowess did not go unnoticed.
His journey with Porsche was marked by an ascent through the echelons of the automotive industry, culminating in his appointment as the President of Porsche Motorsport North America.
In this pivotal role, Springer was instrumental in steering the marque to a golden era of racing dominance.
His leadership was characterized by an unyielding dedication to excellence and an unwavering commitment to the Porsche ethos and he still continues to consult and mentor to this day.
Porsche's Type 356, introduced in 1948, is acknowledged as one of the world's greatest sports cars.
Over a 15-year production run, the handsome and durable 356 evolved from a streamlined little aluminum-bodied coupe powered by a VW-derived, 46hp 1100cc air-cooled flat-four to a powerful autobahn burner carrying a complex, two-liter four-cam boxer Carrera engine of 130 horsepower.
Its steady development brought not only coupes, but luxurious cabriolets and more spartan Speedsters and Roadsters; almost 78,000 examples were produced when production ceased in 1965.
When the 356B, internally known as the T5, arrived in September 1959, the new model brought with it major styling revisions and an engine now standardized at 1,600cc.
Further development culminated with the T-6 in 1963 and the introduction of the ultimate model, the 356C.
Among the details and numerous improvements was a new ZF steering gear along with a compensating spring at the rear to calm the swing axle rear suspension.
The most important change was from drum brakes to the latest Ate disc brakes.
Engines available, both of 1.
6 liters, were the 75bhp 'C' and 95bhp 'SC', the latter replacing the Super 90.
The 356 C is renowned for its lightweight construction, responsive handling, and air-cooled engine character.
Think of it as your ticket out of the doldrums of automotive predictability.
It's a statement piece, proof that you appreciate automotive history as much as you do cutting-edge performance.
A pure, unfiltered sports car.
And proof that Porsche knew how to build a proper driver's machine long before they got obsessed with cup holders and touchscreen menus.
It represents the pinnacle of the brand's early innovation in creating sports cars that deliver joy in pure form.
This model, the last of the 356 model line, was a culmination of relentless refinement.
When it first hit the roads in the early 1960s, the 356 set the benchmark for what a sports car could be-compact, agile, and incredibly engaging.
It was the first car to bear the Porsche name and set a template for the brand's engineering principles that would follow.
The rear-engine layout, air-cooled reliability, and distinctive silhouette began here, with the 356.
This was the car that put Porsche on the map and into the hearts of enthusiasts everywhere.
So, if you're the type who craves a true connection to the machine, a car that rewards skill over brute force, then the 1964 Porsche 356 C Coupe might just be your calling.
It's a testament to timeless design, to engineering purity, and to a time when Porsche simply built brilliant sports cars, nothing more, nothing less.
Bruce had the opportunity to take the 356 out for a road test and found it to be nearly perfect.
It required very little attention because of the excellent mechanical and cosmetic condition of the car.
A really great 356 example with equally great ownership history.
We are selling this car for Alwin as he is getting a new Porsche in the near future.
- Bruce Canepa.
